A group of fans have raised over $15,000 for a documentary covering the origins of the Mother RPG series.
Mother to Earth, a project being funded through Kickstarter, will cover the history of the series, which became well known in the West following Mother 2 protagonist Ness’ appearance in the original Super Smash Bros.
It will also follow the fan scene which led to the unofficial release of a localised – but never published – prototype of the original game, Mother.
Joshua Bone-Christian, working on the project, said: “We even have an interview lined up with the English scriptwriter of the game from all the way back in the Nineties – now all we have to do is get it on tape”.
Only the second game in the series, retitled Earthbound, had been released in the West until last year, when Mother (retitled Earthbound Beginnings) found its way to the Wii U eShop. The release prompted calls for the most recent game in the series – Mother 3 – to see a similar official localisation.
The fan film has 10 days left to make its target of $35,000 to fund the film. A full interview with the project’s founders will be published in the next few days.
