SimCity is poised to be given a new offline mode, allowing users to play the game without connecting to EA’s servers.
The change comes almost a year after the game’s release in March 2013, at which time the company insisted the game needed online connectivity to function.
Patrick Buechner, general manager of the Maxis Emeryville studio, said this: “Bringing the game Offline means big things for our wonderful community of Modders. They can now make modifications to the game and its components without compromising the integrity of the Online game.”
However, critics of the original policy question why the game did not launch with the offline option. Noted critic Jim Sterling tweeted:
SimCity getting an offline mode is cool, until you remember we were told it was *essential* to the game, and were therefore lied to.

The offline mode will be added to SimCity with Update 10 of the game, due soon.
