Lancaster University is set to become the first university in the UK to have its campus recreated on Minecraft.
The university’s Innovation Hub announced the project on its website in June, with a team of students working on introducing the entire campus to the Minecraft universe.
Rob Ellis, an Innovation Unit Team Leader at the university, told the Lancaster website “When the build is complete the university could use it for virtual tours, for example, for foreign students looking to study at Lancaster, or for students studying at our campus in Ghana.
“However, we also really want to use the build as an educational tool that will raise the awareness of digital skills in young people.”
The virtual Lancaster will recreate the university’s Alexandra Square, Ruskin Library and brand new Engineering building as the UK’s 9th best university launches the first ‘Big Build’ project of any university in the UK.
Since Minecraft was first released in 2009, there have been a number of ambitious building projects, with the US Capitol building, the Houses of Parliament and even the entirety of Manhattan – as well as ambitious technical challenges such as basic working computers – replicated in block form.
