Veteran game designer and acting Nintendo boss Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that Pikmin 4 is in development and “very close to completion”.
The existence latest instalment of the garden-based small-scale RTS game was confirmed in a statement made to Eurogamer back in July, which they’ve only just decided to publish.
“It’s actually very close to completion,” Miyamoto said. “Pikmin teams are always working on the next one” he added, during an interview with the publication two months ago. In a more recent statement, he changed his tune slightly, saying: “We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development but that is all we can confirm at present.”
If the game is nearing completion, it seems likely it would appear on either the 3DS or Wii U, rather than the next-generation NX console.
The last Pikmin game, Pikmin 3, launched in 2013 for the Wii U, and was met with critical success. The series has been a cult hit for Nintendo fans since 2001, when the first game was released on GameCube.
Mr. Miyamoto has been running the gaming giant as joint Representative Director since the death of former CEO Satoru Iwata earlier this summer. It is unknown what personal involvement he is taking with the new Pikmin project.
